The awful truth

The bombing of Nagasaki, which occurred on this day in 1945, was truly awful in all senses of the word. Splitting the atom to unleash its enormous power put the genius and depravity of humanity on full, awe-inspiring display. Though we have many positive uses for atomic energy, its initial use to increase our capacity to kill on a massive scale is a moral failure that we have yet to overcome. The war machine rages on.
