On the Feast of the Epiphany, January 5th, it is tradition to ask God’s blessing on our homes. The current year and the initials of the legendary names of the Magi — Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, are marked above the main doorway with a piece of blessed chalk. In the Middle Ages, these three letters — C, M and B — were also written on parchment, tanned animal skins or papyrus and carried by travelers and pilgrims as a protective blessing. While placing this blessing above the doorway of your home, say: “May all who come to our home this year rejoice to find Christ living among us; and may we seek and serve Christ in everyone we meet. Amen.” Place the blessed chalk in a bag to use again next year (store with holiday decorations) or bury it in the backyard. Do not throw it away in the trash! If you do not have blessed chalk, you can cut out the sign below and tape it above your door.
